Nieuwerkerken werd op de kaart gezet door het autobiografische boek van schrijver Dimitri Verhulst "De Helaasheid der dingen".
De plaats wordt er wel Reetveerdegem genoemd.
In 2009 werd daar een film over gemaakt door de Vlaamse regisseur Felix Van Groeningen.
Het geeft een controversieel en rauw zicht op de samenleving in de gemeente door de bril van de auteur die er de publieksprijs van De Gouden Uil Literatuurprijs voor kreeg.
