Nieuwerkerken was put on the map by the autobiographical book of writer Dimitri Verhulst "The Misery of Things".
The place is indeed called Reetveerdegem.
In 2009, a film was made about it by the Flemish director Felix Van Groeningen.
It provides a controversial and raw view of society in the municipality through the lens of the author, who received the audience award from the De Gouden Uil Literature Prize for it.
