Op de plaats waar nu het Tieltse stadhuis staat, liet Margaretha van Constantinopel het toe een passantenhuis voor arme pelgrims en zieken te bouwen. Het hospitaal werd gerund door de Zusters Alexianen. Na de Franse Revolutie werd het gebouw gebruikt als hoofdwacht van de gendarmerie en als vredegerecht. Vanaf 1836 namen de Zusters Apostolinnen uit Brugge er hun intrek en stichtten er een leer- en werkschool. In 1875 namen de stadsdiensten hun intrek in wat voortaan het 'stadhuis' zou worden. De neoclassicistische voorgevel in Franse witsteen is het ontwerp van architect Croquison. In 2009 werd het stadhuis helemaal gerenoveerd en uitgebreid, evenals het archief. Oud en nieuw slaan een brug naar een open dienstverlening. Ook het Vrijetijdspunt van Tielt is hier gehuisvest.
