Bouwtechnisch en historisch heeft de kerk een romaanse basis maar in zijn huidige gedaante wordt ze geklasseerd bij de Brabantse hooggotiek. Het koor is voltooid in 1453 en het schip in 1535. De torenspits kwam er pas in 1900, onder leiding van architect Langerock.
Vier altaren, muurschilderingen in het koor, talrijke kunstwerken vanaf de 16de eeuw vragen uw aandacht. Verschillende van de schilderijen zijn van Gaspar De Crayer en Pieter Jozef Verhaghen. Het orgel (1786) is van Van Peteghem en komt uit het Pauscollege.
De kerk ligt op een heuvel aan de Naamsestraat waardoor men van passanten in de Schapenstraat zegt ‘de levenden lopen onder de doden.’
