De Gentse burgemeester Braun kwam in 1914 naar Oordegem om te onderhandelinen met de Duitse Generaal Boehn, om ze te overtuigen Gent niet te vernielen. Dit viel op dat moment nog te bespreken omdat het einddoel van de Duitse opgehouden troepen Parijs was, en niet Gent of Brugge. Als losgeld kregen ze honderd fietsen, tien motorfietsen en honderduizend sigaren. Een maand later marcheren de Duitsers Gent toch binnen.
