Een van de beroemdste personen die geboren werd in Ruppelmonde is ongetwijfeld de cartograaf Gerard Mercator. Hij werd geboren op 5 maart 1512. Zijn vader Hubertus de Cremer en zijn hoogzwangere moeder kwamen slechts enkele dagen voordien van het Duitse Gangelt naar Rupelmonde afgezakt. Gerardus werd hun 7de kind. Vader Hubertus de Cremer oefende hier zijn beroep van schoenmaker uit.
