De lijn 58 Brugge – Eeklo – Gent, werd in 19de eeuw aangelegd. In 1959 werd de sectie tussen Brugge en Eeklo opgedoekt voor reizigersverkeer. In 1970 hebben de steden Damme en Brugge de handen in elkaar geslagen om een educatief wandel – en fietspad aan te leggen die in 1995 overgenomen werd door de provincie West Vlaanderen.
