Deze beuk is begroeid met de tondelzwam. De naam van de zwam verwijst naar "tondel" of "tonder" wat zeer droog en zeer ontvlambaar materiaal is om vuur aan te maken. Men gebruikte deze zwam in de prehistorie om er tondel van te maken. Met een vuursteen werd tegen een markasiet (steen) geslagen en zo de tondel te laten ontvlammen. Dikwijls werd de tondel ook nog eens in paardenurine geweekt en gedroogd, wat het nog ontvlambaarder maakte.
