Rond het jachtpaviljoen vind je uitzonderlijk een aantal dikkere, oude bomen. Dit zijn bomen die die de oorlogskappingen hebben overleefd hebben. Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog liet de Duitse bezetter bijna alle grote bomen kappen en werd het bos ei zo na verwoest. Dit onder meer voor hout in de loopgraven. Na de oorlog werd het domein onder sekwester geplaatst en in 1930 kwam het in het bezit van de Belgische Staat, bij wijze van oorlogsschadevergoeding. Het bos is ten slotte herbebost tussen de jaren 1930 en 1950, wat het relatief jeugdig aspect ervan verklaart. Als gevolg daarvan zijn in het gehele Hallerbos oude dikke bomen schaars.
