De kerk werd rond 650 gesticht door graaf Madelgar, die zich terugtrok uit het wereldse leven. Het huidige gebouw dateert voornamelijk uit de 10e en 11e eeuw en is een van de beste voorbeelden van romaanse architectuur in België. De kerk heeft twee opvallende torens die het stadsbeeld domineren en symbool staan voor de rijke geschiedenis van Zinnik.
Vincentius, de patroonheilige van de kerk, is ook beschermheilige van onder andere dakdekkers, wijnbouwers en zeelieden.
