Het 3de Duitse legercorps en een deel van het 9de rukten onder bevel van generaal von Kluck op naar de Grote Gete tussen Halen en Tienen. Het Belgische 22ste linieregiment was in Sint-Margriete-Houtem ingekwartierd, rond Grimde werd de linie bezet door het 3de linieregiment. De 3de Gemengde Brigade beschutte de zuidwest- tot zuidoostkant van Tienen. Ze hadden als taak om de Getelinie te verdedigen, de aftocht van het Belgische leger te dekken en het van een omsingeling te behoeden.
