Nadat België zich in 1830 onafhankelijk had verklaard werd pas op 8 augustus 1843 een conventie gehouden te Maastricht over de markering van de grens. In dat jaar werd de grens gemarkeerd door het plaatsen van gietijzeren grenspalen langs de Maas, aan weerszijden, steeds tegenover elkaar en met het zelfde nummer. Paal 107 is de eerste van deze serie langs de Maas. Tegenwoordig vormt de Grensmaas de grens tussen Nederlands en Belgisch Limburg (47 km) en ligt in 't midden van de rivier.
