De opgaande treurbeuk (Fagus sylvatica 'Pendula') groeit achteraan op het protestantse kerkhof, ten noordwesten van de Nieuwe protestantse kerk (gebouwd in 1872) en dicht bij de Oude Kerk (gebouwd in 1794-1795), nabij de scheidingsmuur met het domineehuis. Beide kerken bevinden zich in de wijk Corseele, bekend als de Geuzenhoek. Corseele is de enige protestantse gemeenschap in België die sinds 1554 ononderbroken heeft bestaan. Het kerkhof, waarop de treurbeuk staat, werd in 1824 geschonken door Willem I.
