Kanunnik Barth uit Westerlo hoorde bij het kerkbestuur van de Sint-Dimpnakerk in Geel. Tijdens het Oostenrijks bewind (1713 tot 1794) kocht hij in de omgeving veel gemeentelijke heidegronden. Tijdens de Besloten Tijd, de periode rond 1798 toen er geen kerkdiensten mochten plaatshebben, zocht hij beschutting in zijn hoeve Scherpensteen. Hij liet op de driesprong het kruis aanbrengen dat in de volksmond gekend is als het kruis van de hut. Er was de grote hut Scherpensteen en een wat verder gelegen kleine hut.
