De patroonheilige van Aalbeke is de Heilige Cornelius. Hij zou als bedevaarder drie maal rond de kerk van Aalbeke gewandeld hebben. Of dit waar is, weten we niet. Aalbeke was gedurende lange tijd een waar bedevaartsoord. Tot voor WOII zakten jaarlijks 25.000 pelgrims af naar Aalbeke om bescherming af te dwingen van de H. Cornelius tegen (voornamelijk) kinderziekten. Vandaag trekken nog steeds een kleine duizend pelgrims naar Aalbeke.
