Der Schutzpatron von Aalbeke ist der heilige Cornelius. Er soll als Pilger dreimal um die Kirche von Aalbeke gewandert sein. Ob das wahr ist, wissen wir nicht. Aalbeke war über lange Zeit ein wahrer Wallfahrtsort. Bis zum Zweiten Weltkrieg zogen jährlich 25.000 Pilger nach Aalbeke, um Schutz von H. Cornelius gegen (hauptsächlich) Kinderkrankheiten zu erlangen. Heute ziehen immer noch rund eintausend Pilger nach Aalbeke.
