Meer dan 100 ontmijners zijn reeds verongelukt sedert de tweede wereldoorlog. De laatste is de in augustus 2012 verongelukte DOVO-adjudant Johan Bosmans van het kwartier Meerdaal uit Oud-Heverlee.

In stavelot staat het 'monument des demineurs'.

Het monument werd opgericht begin jaren ’50 in STAVELOT om de tijdens hun werk gesneuvelde ontmijners te eren. Bij de inhuldiging van het monument was zelfs een lid van het Koningshuis aanwezig. Op de koperen platen achteraan het monument staan alle namen van de tot op vandaag gesneuvelde ontmijners. De laatste naam werd toegevoegd in 2012.
