De vuurtoren Lange Nelle kwam in 2023 in het nieuws omdat het licht storend zou werken voor een aantal buurtbewoners. Maar die Lange Nelle wordt als een symbool van de stad gezien. En daar aan morrelen ligt gevoelig. De drie lange flitsen, elke tien seconden, schijnen niet alleen de Noordzee in, ze belanden ook in de nieuwe luxe-appartementen aan de Oosteroever. Dat was niet naar de zin van een deel van de bewoners en dus kwam er bij wijze van compromis een folie om het licht af te schermen. Maar veel Oostendenaars zagen dat dan weer niet zitten. Na een petitie die intussen meer dan 10.000 handtekeningen telt, kwam de stad op haar stappen terug. De folie verdween even snel als ze gekomen was.
