Voor WOI was het domein Halve Maan al een oude Belgsiche vestingswerk.
In WOI bouwden de Duitsers de batterij Eylau, maar daar blijft weinig van over.
Tijdens WOII werd het gebruikt door de Duitsers, eerst 'WN Dietl'.
De batterij Halve maan werd tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog ingericht door de Duitsers, het is de enige nog bewaarde FLAK-site in België, een bunkercomplex voor luchtafweer (Flugabwehrkanone of FLAK). De bewaard gebleven manschappenbunker (R656), een commandobunker, een machinegeweerbunker, verschillende observatieposten, een flankeringsbunker en verschillende bakstenen gebouwen zijn uniek.
Het werd gebouwd op een vroeg 17de-eeuws verdedigingswerk dat teruggaat op het Beleg van Oostende (1601-1604).
