In 1810 tikte Henri De Gorge de steenkoolmijn van le Grand-Hornu in de Borinage op de kop. Architect Bruno Renard bouwde vanaf 1816 in opdracht van de Gorge een industrieel complex rondom een ovaalvormig binnenplein. Vlakbij rezen ook 450 arbeidswoningen, een school en een bibliotheek uit de grond. De Gorge droomde namelijk van de ideale stad voor zijn arbeiders. De utopische mijn van De Gorge bleef bijna anderhalve eeuw in bedrijf, maar in 1954 stopte de steenkoolproductie.
Vandaag is de vroegere steenkoolmijn van top tot teen in het nieuw gestoken. Alleen de machinezaal die aan het binnenplein ligt, werd als ruïne bewaard. Sinds 2002 huisvest le Grand-Hornu het MAC, het Musée des Arts Contemporains. De koolmijn is samen met drie andere Waalse mijnsites in 2012 uitgeroepen tot Werelderfgoed. Tijdens de openingsuren van het museum kan je (gratis) de buitenruimten bezoeken.
