Kort na de 2de wereldoorlog (1947) verschijnen de eerste volhouten zitbanken op de Zeedijk van Middelkerke. Eerst nog groen-wit, later geschilderd in de kleuren van Middelkerke: blauw en wit. Deze eerste massief houten banken waren een eigen ontwerp van Middelkerkenaar Rudolf Lombaert en werden door de lokale schrijnwerker Maurice Minu gebouwd met ‘Congoleesch hout’. Met het verstrijken van de tijd zijn ze onlosmakelijk verbonden gebleven met het beeld van toeristisch Middelkerke.
