Het herdenkingskruis "Croix des Fiancés" herinnert aan een droevige liefdesgebeurtenis in deze streek. Dit kruis staat nabij de weg Vêquée, die een oude Romeinse heirbaan is. Deze weg loopt ongeveer 5km ten westen van de Baraque-Michel.
Op 22 januari 1871 waren François Reiff en zijn verloofde Marie Solherd op weg naar Xhoffraix. François uit Bastenaken leerde Marie uit Xhoffraix kennen in Jalhay. Marie was dienstmeid in Hèvremont.
Om hun papieren voor het huwlijk in orde te brengen legden ze op 22 januari 1871 de 15km lange tochtnaar Xhoffraix te voet af. Op die avond begon het plots te sneeuwen en trok een dichte mist over deze heuvels. In deze verlaten streek met weinig referentiepunten liepen ze verloren. Ze vonden ook nergens een huis waar ze konden aankloppen. Hun dode lichamen werden gevonden in de buurt van dit kruis.
