De onderneming werd in 1833 door Johann Peter Jelmoli-Ciolina opgericht in Zürich als modelwinkel. De oorspronkelijke hoofdvestiging was een locatie aan de Schipfe, direct aan de Limmat.
Met het toenmalige nieuwe concept van vaste prijzen, waarop niet meer kon worden afgedongen en vanaf 1834 werd er bezorgd bij de klanten in de stad en de omgeving. Al snel groeide Jelmoli uit tot een van de beste en meest succesvolle winkels in Zürich.
