Het Grand Théâtre wordt door de stad Genève beheerd en gesubsidieerd via een stichting. Het heeft een eigen balletgroep en een eigen koor. Sinds 1962 wordt de muziek uitgevoerd door het Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. Elke seizoen worden doorgaans acht opera's, twee tot drie balletten en een paar andere muziekstukken opgevoerd.
Het Grand Théâtre verving het nabijgelegen Théâtre de Neuve van 1783, dat in 1880 werd gesloopt. Het nieuwe operagebouw werd tussen 1875 en 1879 gebouwd dankzij een legaat van hertog Karl II van Brunswijk. Het ligt aan de Place Neuve, tussen het Musée Rath en het Conservatoire de musique de Genève. De architect Jacques-Elysée Goss liet zich inspireren door de in 1875 in Parijs geopende Opéra Garnier in de stijl van het Tweede Keizerrijk. Vier grote marmeren standbeelden voor het gebouw vertegenwoordigen drama, dans, muziek en komedie. Het Grand Théâtre werd op 2 oktober 1879 ingewijd met Guillaume Tell van Rossini.
