Niehl grenst in het oosten aan de Rijn, in het zuiden aan Riehl en Nippes, in het westen aan Weidenpesch en Longerich en in het noorden aan Fühlingen en Merkenich.
De oude dorpskern van Niehl ligt op de plek waar de Romeinse weg van Keulen naar Neuss - de huidige Niehler Straße - de oevers van de Rijn tegenkomt. Niehl werd voor het eerst vermeld in het jaar 927. Sinds de 11e eeuw bezat het Kunibertstift in Keulen de parochierechten over de plaats. Politiek gezien behoorde het voormalige boeren- en vissersdorp Niehl tot de graafschap of het ambt Hülchrath in het keurvorstendom Keulen. In 1794 werd Niehl bezet door Franse revolutionaire troepen en werd de plaats een deel van de Mairie Longerich in het kanton Weiden in het arrondissement Keulen in het departement de Roer. In 1815 kwam Niehl onder het Koninkrijk Pruisen en de burgemeester Longerich in de Landkreis Keulen. De inlijving bij Keulen vond plaats op 1 april
1888.
