Onderneem een lukrake zoekactie op de plaatsnaam Oberammergau en het eerste wat je tegenkomt, is het Bijbelse passiespel dat er sinds 1633 om de tien jaar wordt opgevoerd. Het passiespel is van oorsprong een uit de middeleeuwen stammend mysteriespel over het lijden van Christus voor en tijdens de kruisiging. Meestal, en ook in Oberammergau, zijn de spelers plaatselijke amateurs die vaak jarenlang met het hele gezin meedoen. Ze houden zich nog steeds aan de belofte die hun voorouders in 1633 deden toen ze gespaard bleven van een pestepidemie die veel slachtoffers maakte in de streek.
