Het stadhuis van Sternberg dateert uit de 19e eeuw. Het bevindt zich in het centrum van Sternberg, direct aan het marktplein van de stadskern, in de onmiddellijke nabijheid van de vroeggotische stadskerk St. Maria en St. Nikolaus.
Van ongeveer 1230 tot 1250 werd Sternberg volgens een planmatig rastervormig straatnet met een licht elliptische plattegrond aangelegd. In 1248 verleende prins Pribislaw I de nederzetting Sternberg het stadsrecht. Het eerste stadhuis brandde af, net als veel gebouwen, tijdens de grote stadsbrand van 1308.
