De mijn ontstond in het kader van de na 1900 versnelde wapenwedloop tussen de Europese staten. Het Koninkrijk Pruisen kocht na 1900 mijnvelden in het Ruhrgebied om het leger en de vloot van steenkool en cokes te voorzien. De Koninklijk Pruisische Mijninspectie Waltrop en de Koninklijk Pruisische Mijnbouwdirectie Recklinghausen waren verantwoordelijk voor de bouw en exploitatie van de mijn en de daarbij behorende wooncomplexen. De bovengrondse installaties werden ontworpen door architect van de Sand. Als terrein dienden de vroegere boerderijen Heilermann en Lehnemann. De Lehnemannse hof werd daarbij in de mijnbouw gebruikt als bouwplaats en zijn stal werd gebruikt voor de mijnpaarden. Het mijnveld had ondergronds een oppervlakte van 27 vierkante kilometer.
