The colliery was created in connection with the intensified arms race of the European states after 1900. After 1900, the Kingdom of Prussia bought mine fields in the Ruhr area to supply the army and navy with coal and coke. The Royal Prussian Mining Inspectorate Waltrop and the Royal Prussian Mining Directorate Recklinghausen were responsible for the construction and operation of the colliery and the associated residential complexes. The surface facilities were designed by the architect van de Sand. The former Heilermann and Lehnemann farms served as the site. The Lehnemannsche Hof was used as a building yard and its stable for the mine horses. The mine field had an area of 27 square kilometres underground.
