Mine blev etableret i forbindelse med det styrkede våbenkapløb blandt de europæiske stater efter 1900. Kongeriget Preussen købte efter 1900 kulfelter i Ruhr-området for at forsyne hær og flåde med kul og koks. Den Kongeligt Preussiske Berginspektion Waltrop og Den Kongeligt Preussiske Bergværksdirektion Recklinghausen var ansvarlige for byggeri og drift af minen samt de tilhørende boligområder. Overfladeanlæggene blev planlagt af arkitekten van de Sand. Som grundlag blev de tidligere gårde Heilermann og Lehnemann brugt. Lehnemann-gården blev i minens drift brugt som byggeplads, og hans stald blev brugt til minerheste. Kulfeltet havde under jorden et areal på 27 kvadratkilometer.
