De voormalige Lippeschleuse Datteln werd in 1826 bij Datteln bij Huis Vogelsang gebouwd. Daarom wordt het ook wel Schleuse Vogelsang genoemd.
De Lippe werd in de 19e eeuw bevaarbaar gemaakt door verschillende stuwen en sluizen tot Lippstadt. Bij Huis Vogelsang was er een uitgesproken mergeltrap met stroomversnellingen, die overgestuwd moest worden. Hoewel de bouw al lang tevoren als noodzakelijk werd beschouwd, stelde pas een Pruisische kabinetsofferte van 28 augustus 1824 de benodigde geldmiddelen beschikbaar.
