La ex chiusa Lippeschleuse Datteln fu costruita nel 1826 a Datteln presso Haus Vogelsang. Per questo motivo è anche chiamata chiusa Vogelsang.
Il fiume Lippe è stato reso navigabile fino a Lippstadt nel XIX secolo attraverso diversi sbarramenti e chiuse. Presso Haus Vogelsang c'era una marcata soglia di marna con rapide, che doveva essere allagata. Sebbene la costruzione fosse già considerata necessaria da molto tempo, solo un'ordinanza del gabinetto prussiano del 28 agosto 1824 rese disponibili i fondi necessari.
