La antigua esclusa Lippeschleuse Datteln fue construida en 1826 en Datteln, en la casa Vogelsang. Por ello, también se le llama esclusa Vogelsang.
En el siglo XIX, el río Lippe fue navegable hasta Lippstadt gracias a diversos niveles de embalses y esclusas. En la casa Vogelsang había un característico nivel de marga con rápidos que debía ser desbordado. Aunque la construcción ya se consideraba necesaria desde mucho antes, solo una orden del gabinete prusiano del 28 de agosto de 1824 proporcionó los fondos necesarios.
