De Kolkturm staat op de naar hem vernoemde Kolkturmberg. Het 15,5 meter hoge bouwwerk werd in 1976 opgericht en in 1997 gerestaureerd. Door de uitstekende ligging biedt de top een uitzicht over de stad Halle en tot in de Saalekreis en het Mansfelder Land.
De Kolkturm is al de derde uitkijktoren op de Kolkturmberg of in de onmiddellijke omgeving. In 1880 bouwde de hallesche Kolkgesellschaft een houten constructie, die in 1921 na ernstige schade door vandalisme werd afgebroken. In de jaren dertig werd op de nabijgelegen Schwarzen Berg een tweede houten toren gebouwd. Na ongeveer 30 jaar moest ook deze vanwege bouwvalligheid worden afgebroken. Op de plaats van de eerste toren werd uiteindelijk door de stedelijke Reichsbahnausbesserungswerk de huidige constructie opgericht, die nog steeds aanwezig is.
