Het meer bevindt zich in een recreatiegebied en wordt gebruikt voor zeilen, surfen, duiken, kanoën en als zwemmeer. Bij het meer bevindt zich het buitenbad Klein Wangerooge. De kwaliteit van het zwemwater wordt sinds 1991 gecontroleerd, meestal zonder opmerkingen. In 2003 en 2005 was het bad echter tijdens het badseizoen minimaal 14 dagen gesloten.
