De Propyleeën aan de westzijde van het Münchense Königsplatz werden door Leo von Klenze in opdracht van koning Ludwig I gebouwd in de vorm van een tempelingang. Ze zijn naast de obelisk op Karlsplatz het enige bouwwerk van Leo von Klenze dat Ludwig I aan de stad München schonk.
Al in 1816 werd overwogen om de Propyleeën te bouwen, maar het duurde 30 jaar voordat de opdracht hiervoor werd gegeven. Klenze schilderde nog voor de bouw een afbeelding van de Propyleeën om voor zijn project te adverteren. Toen koning Ludwig I in 1848 moest abdication, stond het project opnieuw ter discussie – niet in de laatste plaats omdat München op dat moment hier geen stadspoort meer nodig had, aangezien de stad al ver over de Königsplatz heen was gegroeid.
