De Berlijnse Muur was tijdens de deling van Duitsland een grensverdedigingssysteem van de Duitse Democratische Republiek, dat meer dan 28 jaar, van 13 augustus 1961 tot 9 november 1989, bestond en de DDR hermetisch moest afsluiten van West-Berlijn. Ze scheidde niet alleen de verbindingen in het gebied Groot-Berlijn tussen het oostelijke deel en het westelijke deel van de stad, maar omsloot ook volledig de drie sectoren van het westelijke deel en onderbrak daarmee ook zijn verbindingen met de Berlijnse omgeving, die in het DDR-district Potsdam lag.
Van de Berlijnse Muur moet de voormalige inter-Duitse grens tussen West- en Oost-Duitsland worden onderscheiden.
