In de grot van Hohlenstein-Stadel werden de eerste onbetwistbare voorbeelden van kunst, en waarschijnlijk ook religie, gevonden. Men ontdekte er het ivoren beeldje van een 'leeuwmens'. Het lichaam is menselijk, maar het hoofd is leeuwachtig. Een symbool dat ook door autofabrikant Peugeot werd gebruikt. Het was het eerste bewijs dat de menselijke geest dingen kan bedenken die niet echt bestaan. Het beeldje met de leeuwenkop is het oudst bekende zoomorfe (diervormige) beeldhouwwerk ter wereld en het oudst bekende, onbetwiste voorbeeld van figuratieve kunst. Door middel van koolstofdatering van materiaal uit de laag waarin het werd gevonden, is de ouderdom vastgesteld op tussen de 35.000 en 40.000 jaar.
