De Franciscaanse orde van de Keulse Franciscaanse provincie stichtte op 14 februari 1488 een klooster in Dorsten. De nieuwgebouwde conventgebouwen werden in 1493 door de Franciscaanse orde overgenomen. Inmiddels hoorde het convent als gevolg van de veranderingen door de Reformatie bij de Saksische ordeprovincie. Toen tijdens de secularisatie vanaf 1803 talrijke kloosters werden gesloten, bleef het convent in Dorsten - mogelijk uit oogpunt van het door hen geleide gymnasium - in eerste instantie bestaan. Ook bij de kloostsluitingen door de Franse regering in 1811, na de annexatie van het hertogdom Arenberg-Meppen, werd Dorsten niet getroffen, maar werd de opname van nieuwe novicen verboden, totdat de Pruisische koning Friedrich Wilhelm III. dit in 1825 weer toestond en de Franciscaanse kloosters in Dorsten en Paderborn zekerheid over hun voortbestaan gaf.
