Het Deense leger was op de avond van 5 februari 1864 al begonnen met een terugtocht uit de Danewerk-verdedigingswerken tijdens een sneeuwstorm, wat door de Pruisisch-Oostenrijkse legerleiding als een troepenbeweging werd opgevat. In de ochtend van 6 februari 1864 slaagden de Pruisische troepen onder prins Friedrich Karl van Pruisen er bij Arnis in, zoals door de Denen verwacht, de oversteek over de Schlei te maken en daarmee de Danewerk-positie te omzeilen. De Deense opperbevelhebber Christian Julius de Meza gaf daarop de opdracht tot verdere terugtocht om een omsingeling van zijn troepen te voorkomen.
