In de indrukwekkende Kroningszaal vonden eeuwenlang feestmaaltijden plaats ter ere van nieuw gekroonde koningen. Tussen 813 en 1531 werden maar liefst 31 Duitse koningen in Aken gekroond—een bewijs van het belang van de stad en haar stadhuis in de Europese geschiedenis. Tegenwoordig wordt in deze zaal jaarlijks de Internationale Karelsprijs uitgereikt aan personen die zich inzetten voor Europese eenheid.
