Paderborn-Sennelager wordt algemeen beschouwd als een wijk van de stad Paderborn, die zich binnen het district Schloss Neuhaus/Sande bevindt. Volgens de gemeentelijke verordening van de stad Paderborn heeft Sennelager echter niet de status van een officiële wijk, maar maakt het overwegend deel uit van de wijk Schloss Neuhaus, die samen met Sande het stadsdistrict Schloss Neuhaus/Sande vormt. Sennelager ontstond als een legerkamp voor het naburige oefenterrein Senne.
