De rotsachtige wadplaten van Helgoland, met hun bijbehorende onderwaterwereld, maken deel uit van het natuurreservaat Helgoland Rock Base en zijn het enige habitat in zijn soort in Duitsland. Ze liggen ten westen en noorden van Helgoland en komen bij eb bloot te liggen. Het gemiddelde getijverschil bedraagt hier 2,30 meter. De rotsachtige wadplaten zijn in de loop der eeuwen ontstaan door de geleidelijke erosie van de kliffen van het eiland.
