Op uitnodiging van hertog Carl August verlaat Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1775 zijn geboortestad Frankfurt am Main en volgt hem naar Weimar. In datzelfde jaar bezoekt Goethe voor het eerst zijn vriendin Charlotte von Stein in Schloss Kochberg in Großkochberg, zo'n 35 km ten zuiden van Weimar. In 1788 bezoekt Goethe Kochberg voor de laatste keer. Van Kochberg reist hij naar Rudolstadt en daar ontmoet hij voor het eerst Schiller. Behalve Goethe en Schiller zijn ook hertog Carl August en zijn familie en Johann Gottfried Herder te gast op Schloss Kochberg. Van 1733 tot 1946 is het kasteel eigendom van de familie von Stein.
