Het stadsbeeld van de middeleeuwse Altstadt is sterk beïnvloed door de bombardementen tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De binnenstad werd quasi volledig weggevaagd. Via het Dom-Römer-Projekt werd het centrum van de oude stad tussen 2012 en 2018 herbouwd om de omgeving zijn vooroorlogse aanzien terug te geven. Vakwerkhuizen, herenhuizen, straten en pleintjes werden gerestaureerd met oog voor het oorspronkelijke middeleeuws karakter. Een wandeling doorheen de pittoreske pleinen en kronkelende steegjes geeft je al snel een glimp van de unieke mix tussen geschiedenis en architectuur.
