Het Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys (voorheen bekend als het Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc) werd gebouwd in 1927 voor de Expo van 1929 in de stad. Het werd in 1989 gerenoveerd om te dienen als het belangrijkste stadion voor de Olympische Zomerspelen van 1992.
In 2001 werd het stadion vernoemd naar de voormalige president van de Generalitat de Catalunya, Lluís Companys i Jover, die in 1940 door het Franco-regime werd geëxecuteerd in het nabijgelegen kasteel van Montjuïc.
Toen de Grand Prix van Spanje en andere races tot 1975 op het Formule 1-circuit van Montjuïc werden gehouden, diende het stadion als paddock voor de teams. Vanwege veiligheidsproblemen werd de F1-race van 1975 bijna geboycot door de coureurs.
