Bison bison
De Amerikaanse bison of buffel was de belangrijkste voedselbron voor de Native Americans die jaagden op hun vlees, huid, botten, enz., maar altijd met groot respect en bewondering voor hun kwaliteiten, en dank voor alle voordelen.
Er wordt geschat dat ze 7 miljoen exemplaren konden verwachten, maar met de komst van de Spanjaarden werden ze bijna tot uitsterven bejaagd in de negentiende eeuw, wat slechts 750 exemplaren in 1890 overliet.
De Bronx Zoo in de VS hield een groep overlevenden, wat de populatie van Yellowstone National Park en andere reservaten herstelde. Momenteel zijn er ongeveer een half miljoen individuen.
