De havenstad Tarraco was de eerste Romeinse nederzetting op het Iberische schiereiland. Wanneer je de straten en pleinen langs de Middellande Zee verkent, snap je meteen waarom de gezellige stad een favoriete bestemming van Keizer Augustus was. De Romeinse cultuur blijft sterk aanwezig in het huidige Tarragona dankzij monumenten als het amfitheater en de ruines van het Forum. Tarraco mocht daarom absoluut niet ontbreken op de Werelderfgoedlijst van de UNESCO.
In mei kan je de invloedrijke Romeinse periode helemaal opnieuw beleven. Het jaarlijks festival Tarraco Viva laat je proeven van authentieke recepten tijdens historische opvoeringen als gladiatorengevechten en klassiek Romeins theater.
