Het plein ligt nabij de oude Puerta del Sol, een toegangspoort van de oude stadsmuur. Omdat daar de kerk van San Martín stond, werd het plein vroeger ook wel Plaza de San Martín genoemd. Destijds was het plein veel groter en strekte het zich uit tot plaatsen die vandaag de dag zelfstandige pleinen in Salamanca zijn, zoals bijvoorbeeld de huidige markt, de Plaza del Corrillo en de Plaza del Poeta Iglesias. De Plaza de San Martín in Salamanca werd daarom eerder aangeduid als "het grootste plein van het christendom". Daar vonden feesten, markten, proclamaties, enz. plaats. Vroeger werden er ook stierengevechten op het plein gehouden.
