Voor een flinke dosis symboliek, moet je in Montserrat zijn. Daar vind je, tussen de rotsen van de Montserrat-berg, een eeuwenoud klooster waar vandaag nog een zeventigtal Benedictijnse monniken wonen. In het gebouw kan je La Moreneta bewonderen. Dat mariabeeld stelt de zwarte Madonna voor, de beschermheilige van Catalonië, en is de hoofdrolspeler in een Catalaanse legende. Het oorspronkelijke beeld zou namelijk ontdekt zijn in een grot, maar was te zwaar om te verplaatsen. De lokale bisschop besloot zo om een klooster rond het beeld te bouwen.
In Montserrat kan je ook je muzikaal hartje ophalen. Elke dag, behalve zaterdag, geeft Escolania, één van Europa’s oudste jongenskoren - met strenge selectieprocedure -, het beste van zichzelf. Zoete zangstemmen alom.
